From Drum Sticks to Pepper MillsWhen Vic Firth started making his own drum sticks over 40 years ago as the timpanist for the Boston Symphony, he never imagined that one day he would also be making pepper mills, salt mills and rolling pins too. Just over 15 years ago, Vic learned that a wood turning factory was in foreclosure in Newport, Maine. The factory had been manufacturing various items including beater bars for vacuum cleaners, wooden caps for bottles, and gourmet products since 1856. Since their specialty was making square wood round, Vic figured it would be the ideal factory to make drum sticks too. One look and Vic bought it. Newport, Maine is a small town of around 3000 people and Vic didn’t want to be the new owner and lay anyone off. Even though he bought it to just make drum sticks, he didn’t have enough work at the time to keep all of the employees busy, so he continued making the pepper mills, salt mills and rolling pins. Today his factor Protecting the environment has always been a priority for Vic. In addition to using FSC certified wood suppliers, all of our scrap wood and sawdust is used as fuel to heat our factory.
