Getting to the Root of the MatterOne of VGM Club's newest agronomy suppliers, Rootwell, offers an innovative solution capable of promoting deeper root growth for healthier trees and shrubs while eliminating wasteful surface water run-off. Known as Rootwell, the device comprises an irrigation and aeration tube system that is inserted into the ground at the same time as a new tree is planted. Alternatively, Rootwell can be introduced into the ground later via suitable-sized holes created by a soil auger around a growing tree or shrub. Typically, up to four Rootwell units would be used for one tree to provide permanent vertical channels in the soil profile through which air, water, fertilizers and soil amendments can reach the critical root zone located at deeper soil horizons. Among the stated benefits of a Rootwell system are a potential ten-fold increase in oxygen levels at the root zone, improved targeting and uptake of applied fertilizers, deeper root system development and increased biomass growth, producing longer living, healthier and more securely rooted specimens. Additionally, the system can make water run-off a thing of the past, with the potential to reduce a plant's water requirements by up to 30%.  Developed in the US, Rootwell has been specified and used since 1998 by landscape architects, civil engineers, contractors and golf course managers, among others. Rootwell is available in two sizes. The smaller unit measures 250mm long by 75mm diameter and is recommended for very small trees, vines and perennial plants and shrubs. For larger transplanted tress, the 457mm long by 75mm diameter Root Pro 318 unit is designed for insertion inside or outside the excavated hole to provide the maximum open surface area to promote free movement of air, water and nutrients through the soil to the roots.
